Tesla Battery Replacement Cost or Sell the Car?

We buy complete Model S, 3, X and Y vehicles with battery warnings, charging faults, accident damage and major repair estimates.

Independent information for Tesla owners. Essex Scrap is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tesla.

Tesla Model 3 used to illustrate Tesla battery and vehicle buying information

A Tesla that will not wake up, charge or select drive does not automatically need a complete battery. The first job is to find out whether the fault is in the main battery, the small low-voltage battery, the charging system or another high-voltage component.

Why There Is No One Tesla Battery Replacement Cost

Tesla has used different battery sizes, cell types and pack designs across Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X. A quote also changes depending on whether the garage proposes a small component repair, a remanufactured pack or a complete replacement.

Do not assume a dashboard message means the whole battery is finished. Fault codes and test results should show why the pack, rather than the charger, low-voltage supply or another high-voltage component, is considered faulty.

High-voltage traction battery

Stores driving energy. Possible issues include isolation faults, cell imbalance, cooling trouble, capacity loss and physical pack damage.

Low-voltage battery

Powers computers and enables the high-voltage system. If it fails, the car may not wake, unlock normally or engage drive.

We Can Quote Without a Complete Diagnosis

A Tesla Service estimate or specialist report is useful, but you do not need to spend more money just to ask us for a price. Photograph the warning message, tell us what the car does and send any paperwork you already have.

The details that help us value it

Model and registration, mileage, postcode, warning messages, charge level, whether it accepts AC or rapid charging, whether it selects drive, number of keys and clear photographs of the body, wheels and interior.

Symptoms That Need Separating

  • Will not wake up: start with low-voltage supply and control-system checks.
  • Will not AC charge: inspect the supply, cable, port and onboard charger before blaming the pack.
  • Will not rapid charge: record charger errors and determine whether the fault follows the car or charging site.
  • Reduced range: separate gradual capacity loss from weather, tyres, driving conditions and displayed-range calibration.
  • Electrical-system warning: preserve the exact message and diagnostic evidence.
  • Impact or underside damage: stop using the car until high-voltage safety has been assessed.

Common Tesla Battery and High-Voltage Faults

Low-voltage battery failure

The low-voltage battery runs the computers, locks, screens and the equipment that connects the main battery. Warning messages may appear before it fails, but a completely flat low-voltage system can leave the car unresponsive. This is not the same as failure of the main drive battery.

Cell imbalance or reduced capacity

The main pack contains many groups of cells. If one group becomes weaker than the rest, the car may limit charging, reduce power or show an unexpected change in its charge level. Gradual loss of range alone can simply be normal ageing, so battery-health data matters.

Isolation fault

An isolation warning means the car has detected an electrical path between the high-voltage system and the vehicle body. The cause can be inside the battery, but it can also involve high-voltage wiring, moisture, the cabin heater, air-conditioning compressor or another connected component.

Contactor or pre-charge fault

Contactors are heavy-duty switches inside the high-voltage system. The car checks them before connecting the battery. If the check fails, the screens may work but the vehicle can refuse to go into drive or begin charging.

Battery heating and cooling problems

The pack relies on pumps, valves, sensors, coolant and, on some vehicles, a dedicated heater. A fault can slow charging, reduce performance or prevent rapid charging. A cooling-system problem should be repaired before it causes further battery damage.

Charging fault mistaken for battery failure

If the car charges on a Supercharger but not at home, or the other way around, the fault may be in the cable, charge port, onboard charger or external supply. Testing more than one known-good charging source helps narrow it down.

Useful evidence before you sell or repair

Photograph every warning message, note whether AC and rapid charging work, record the maximum charge level and keep any Tesla Service estimate. That information can prevent a cheaper fault being confused with a complete battery failure and helps us value the car properly.

Sell Your Faulty Tesla Directly

No auction and no need to repair it first. Send the model, registration, mileage, postcode, warning messages and photographs for a purchase price.

Repair It or Sell It?

Repair the car

This can make sense when the exact fault is known, the price is fixed and the finished car will be worth comfortably more than the bill.

Sell it as it stands

We buy complete faulty Teslas directly, including non-runners and cars with incomplete diagnosis or costly repair estimates.

High-Voltage Battery Safety

Tesla's owner information says the high-voltage system has no user-serviceable parts and should only be handled by trained technicians. Orange cables and high-voltage components must not be opened, disconnected or modified.

Do not investigate a worsening battery incident yourself

If the car is unusually hot, hissing, popping, smoking, venting vapour or giving off a strong unusual odour, keep away, warn others and call 999. Do not charge or move it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Tesla battery replacement cost in the UK?

There is no single reliable price. A low-voltage battery, charger or battery heater fault costs very differently from a complete high-voltage pack. The model, battery version, diagnosis, parts and labour must all be confirmed first.

Does a dead Tesla always need a high-voltage battery?

No. A low-voltage battery, charging fault, contactor, wiring, control module or other issue can stop the car waking up or moving. Diagnosis should identify the failed system before a replacement pack is considered.

Will Essex Scrap buy a Tesla without a diagnosis?

Yes. A diagnostic report can help, but it is not essential. Send the exact warning message, model, mileage, registration, postcode and clear photographs. Tell us whether the car powers on, charges, selects drive and rolls freely.

Can Essex Scrap buy a Tesla with a battery fault?

Yes, we can assess complete Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles with battery, charging, drive-unit or accident faults. Collection depends on the vehicle's condition, access and safe recovery requirements.
